Magazines that do not accept articles from press trips

Postby Lola » January 25th, 2010, 9:46 am

Does anyone know of a list somewhere of magazines that don't accept articles from press trips or do most of them accept articles based on a don't ask, don't tell policy? Maybe I'm being overly optimistic.

I know of one glossy whose editors go on press trips but they don't accept articles from freelancers who do. Reeks of double standard to me

Apparently many are still operating under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Even that has been repealed in the military ;)

I suppose their argument might be: "We know we're honest, but we can't be sure that you are."

In any case, it's their magazine, so if they want to use a double standard, who's going to stop them?

Well the good news is, there are fewer and fewer of these each quarter. (Not just my observation---I'm hearing it from CVB people as well.) The economy being what it is, all but a few top-tier ones are having trouble paying expenses adequately, so they're having to back off from it. And writers are less willing to fly off to Chile for a week on their own dime just to earn $500 from an article payment.

Then there are those idiotic publications like Huffington Post that pay most writers $0 but then also say you can accept hosting. Slave labor that comes with conditions. In cases like this, most writers say, "Sure, whatever you say" and then go on the trips anyway. Otherwise everything they write would need to be done from desk research.
