Travel Writing Groups/Workshops

Postby Jacqui Bryant » March 25th, 2009, 7:00 pm

I want to break into travel writing, but I don't have anyone to critique/edit my writing on a regular basis. I'm hoping to workshop with someone (or someones) regularly to help improve my writing, observation and editing skills. If you're interested write me at nightmare(dot)sequence(at)gmail(dot)com or comment here.

I'm new to the travel writing community, so if this is inappropriate pleas let me know and I'll remove the posting.

Thanks much.

Travel Writing Groups/Workshops

Postby W. Ruth » March 26th, 2009, 7:00 pm

I have been instructing travel writing classes for nearly 15 years and have been writing and publishing travel stories for well over twenty. I also instruct other types of writing and conduct workshops. Your best bet is to first try and take a travel writing course and then see if there are workshops in your area (other writing groups) however, you really need one with people who understand travel writing. Also, read as many travel stories as you can and collect some that are the style you'd like to write in.
That's another good way to learn how to construct them.

A workshop can leapfrog you over many early hurdles – and offer welcome impetus and camaraderie. I teach travel-writing and new media classes online via Writers.com http://www.writers.com/castleman.html. Other fine courses include Gotham Writer's Workshop and UCLA Extension.

Best of luck, wherever your writing leads you. Cheers, Amanda

Hi Jacqui,

I would check out Craigslist to be part of our create a travel writers group in you area. However, consider putting on a strict timeline for how long you will participate or before you re-evaluate what you are getting from a particular writers group. Workshops frequently have dynamics that may not help every writer because sometimes good writers are not have good readers, defining what works in a writing is an art within itself, if you are in a group of writers who are not regularly published they may not have the experience know what is getting published. The learn the basics and start sending stuff out and see how you do. Read submission guidelines as this will tell you what an editor is looking for and then read the articles they are publishing.

Best of luck.
